In 2009, wildfire swept through critical habitat at the edge of the Hoopa Valley Tribal lands where northern spotted owls were known to be nesting. Fire is an increasing risk for the owls, and these habitats can take a long time to recover. More than a decade later, this forest is still in an early stage of regeneration. The fire that burned through this area was started by a trespass cannabis grow.
